Ondertussen moeten er ook andere vragen beantwoord worden. Quizdame Desiree (studente journalistiek) loopt de tafels langs om de antwoordformulieren op te halen. Veertig vragen, vijf categorieën, maximaal zeven mensen in een team. Wat is de laatste letter van het Griekse alfabet? Uit welk land komen de Inca’s?
Het oorspronkelijk Ierse pubquizzen wordt steeds populairder in Nederland. Allebei de Utrechtse pubs, Florin en de Mick O’ Connels, hebben een pubquiz. In de Mick is tweewekelijkse quiz zo populair dat ze een tweede quiz hebben opgericht, op deze manier is er elke maandag pubquiz. Het is blijkbaar een goede manier om rustige horeca avonden op te vullen en mensen lijken de combinatie biertje en gezellig avondje quizzen met je vrienden, familie, kennissen, collega’s te waarderen. Café ’t Weeshuis aan het domplein doet zelfs mee aan de landelijke Murphy’s Quiz Night, waar in Nederland alleen al meer dan honderd kroegen aan meedoen.
Een goed pubquiz team heeft de taken verdeeld. De echte toppers van de Mick O’ Connels hebben per teamlid verschillende dingen uit hun hoofd geleerd. Feiten over de staten van Amerika bijvoorbeeld, dat soort vragen komen altijd aan bod. Verder beschikt een winnend team over een sportexpert, een paparazzi, een geograaf en mensen met grote algemene kennis. Sommige teams nemen het heel serieus. Die gaan voor de pot en hebben er een sport van gemaakt. Zo’n veertig teams spelen tweewekelijks mee, de bovenkant van ranglijst wordt standvastig beheerd door een aantal kernteams.
Desempacatamento, Working Title, the Weird Maxim en One beer for the Whole pub zitten bijna standaard boven de 35 punten. Voor de overige, minder fanatieke, spelers is er drank te winnen met de bonusronde. Zo gaan ook the Sneaky Monkeys voor de drank, vanavond hebben ze een van hun slechtste avonden ooit. Nadat het bonusrondeformulier al ingeleverd is worden nog steeds hersens gepijnigd over het anagram. Vragen als: ‘Hoe heet de tweede romantische komedie met Julia Roberts en Richard Gere?’ en ‘Hoe heet het nieuwe gezicht van l’Oreal?’ weten ze wel te beantwoorden, de meiden van het team halen hun hart op in de entertainment ronde.
De Mick pubquiz is opgezet door Bill. Als rasechte Ier wist Bill alle kneepjes van het pubquizvak, en gaf hij verborgen hints. Op de Quizzard, de ranglijst, stond altijd: ‘Good luck tonight! – Bill Smith’. Zijn achternaam was altijd een antwoord op een van de vragen. Ook het nummer verstopt in een anagram draaide Bill vaak tussendoor. Een oplettende speler hield dat in de gaten. Toen hij vorig jaar noodlottig om het leven kwam, nam een Nederlander met Iers accent het over. De nieuwe quizmaster is nog niet zo gewiekst, en Nederlandse dingen spreekt hij expres op zijn Engels uit. Ook komen regelmatig vragen voorbij die al in eerdere quizzes gesteld zijn.
Ondertussen gaan the Sneaky Monkeys de mist in bij de sportronde. ‘Wie was de nummer 1 tennisspeler van de wereld in 1999?’, ‘Wat is een “fluke” bij snooker?’ en ‘Wie heeft de Olympische beweging in 1892 opgericht?’… Uiteindelijk eindigen ze met zeventien punten, ver onder het gemiddelde. En het anagram? ‘I said a hip hop the hippie the hippie to the hip hip hop, a you don’t stop the rock it to the bang bang boogie’. Oftewel: Sugar Hill Gang met Rapper’s delight.
