Door Maarten Nauw.

'Me and my army of cats would spread joy.'

Daniel Eastman

Name: Daniel Eastman (20, exchange student sign language interpreter – originally from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York)

Describe your style? ‘Today I wear different clothes than I usually do, it's the most colourful combination I own. My wardrobe is mostly black. I like to combine black clothes with different finishes. Like a matte shirt with a shiney leather jacket. And I like to combine cheap vintage clothes I find in second hand shops in Boston, with more expensive new stuff I get at a shop like Urban Outfitters.’
Super ugly? ‘Well, the usual – Uggs, Crocs. And I don't think anyone should wear sweat pants in public. At home, fine. But in public? Never. The thing I hate most are ruffles. Especially in bright colours. Ulgh.’
Music? ‘Mostly electronic. From electro house to more depressing, dark music. I was listening to Imagine Dragons on my way to the HU. When I was younger I was a huge fan of No Doubt. I still love their Tragic Kingdom record.’
Last concert/party? ‘I haven't been to any in the Netherlands I'm afraid. I only found out Lana del Rey was playing afterwards. And tickets for Steve Aoki are sold out. And when Major Lazer is playing, I've already left.’
Movie? ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I've seen that movie countless times.’
Book? ‘Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. I've just finished re-reading it. I read it first when I was still in high school. It's about a girl in high school who's raped. But you only find out about that like halfway in the story.’
Newspaper? ‘I don't read newspapers. But my homepage is the CNN website.’
Number 1 book mark? ‘Tumblr.’
App? ‘Instagram. And Afterlight, that's a very good photo effects app.’
How many Facebook-friends? ‘About 600.’

How do you live? ‘When college starts again, I'm going to share an appartment with three friends and a cat, on the campus of the university. Last year I had a room of my own in a dorm. Usually you have to share your room, but as supervisor for freshmen I deserved one of my own, thankfully. I've heard it's hard to find a room here in Utrecht, but it's not hard to find a room in the States.’
Are you religious? ‘No. I was raised catholic, my grandparents are catholic. But my mum is atheist and my dad doesn't care. And anyway, I'm gay so fuck church.’

Club or café? ‘Club.
Meat or vega? ‘I've been a vegetarian for seven years now. I used to be vegan, but because I can't decipher the ingredients here in Europe, I've loosed up on that for now.’
Blind or deaf? ‘Deaf.’
One night stand or relationship? ‘(whispers) One night stand.’
Man or woman? ‘Man.’
Morning person or night owl? ‘Night owl.’
Black or white? ‘Black.’
House cat or bat? ‘Cat, obviously. I love cats. One of the friends who live in the appartment I'm moving into after summer has a cat. Melah. Although her real name is Poopface. But it's nice to call her Melah.’
Mac or pc? ‘Mac.’

What would you like to do when you're older? ‘Hmm. Do something big? Like take over the world with an army of cats. And then we make this rule that everyone should wear black. Not as a dictatorship, we would also spread joy. And make everyone understand cats are superior to dogs.’

What are you up to this summer? ‘Travelling throughout Europe. Austra, Greece, Venice, all over the place. For three weeks. I'm really looking forward to it. Now that I'm in Europe, I'm going to make the most of it.’
